Natural Farming Success at Golden Bay's Rockhaven Farm

Wayne and Nicky Packard of Golden Bay have embraced regenerative farming, transforming their land by eliminating synthetic fertilisers and imported feed. Fifteen years ago, they adopted the Albrecht-Kinsey fertiliser system, which focuses on balancing soil minerals to improve fertility and crop quality. This shift has led to healthier soil, evidenced by a dramatic increase in earthworm populations—from just 2-3 worms per spade square to 50-60 worms today.

Their approach uses natural mineral fertilisers like calcium and magnesium, tailored annually based on soil tests conducted in the U.S. The results are remarkable: improved cow health, resilient pastures with diverse species, and reduced need for inputs like palm kernel or chemical sprays.

The Packards also grow wheat for Takaka’s Bacca Bakery, producing chemical-free, heritage-variety wheat for sourdough bread. Farming on their family-owned Rockhaven Farm for six generations, the couple demonstrates that sustainable methods can benefit both the environment and financial bottom line.
