Healthy soils... Healthy profits

Hawkes Bay Future Farming is proud to announce its upcoming conference, "Healthy Soils… Healthy Profits," set to take place on Wednesday 18 September 2024, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Toitoi Assembly Room. 

This event, now in its second edition, aims to inspire resilience and profitability in future farming by focusing on the critical role of healthy soils influencing catchment groups right through the supply chain to to international markets.

The event will feature a lineup of speakers who will share their expertise on soil carbon and health, sustainable agriculture, and the international agricultural environment:

  • Dr. Alison Dewes, BVSc, MSc – A fourth-generation dairy farmer and second-generation veterinarian, Dr. Dewes will deliver a presentation on "The Importance of Healthy Soil in Your Water Catchments." With a background in animal health, agricultural business performance, and ecosystem health, Dr. Dewes is a leading advocate for profitable and resilient food production systems that protect and replenish ecological health.
  • Dr. Debbie Care, Verdi MVP Practice Lead – Dr. Care will present on "Measuring and Understanding Soil Health and the Importance of Soil Carbon." As a leader at Verdi, Dr. Care is at the forefront of helping New Zealand farmers improve soil health while earning additional income through soil carbon credits. Her insights will be invaluable for farmers looking to align their practices with global market demands for climate-related disclosures.
  • Dan Bloomer & Alex Dickson, LandWISE – Representing LandWISE, Dan Bloomer and Alex Dickson will discuss "Carbon Positive - Improving Intensive Cropping Soils Health." LandWISE has been a leader in sustainable production and agri-technology since its formation in 1999, and their presentation will focus on practical strategies for enhancing soil health in intensive cropping systems.
  • Hon. Todd McClay, Minister of Agriculture – Minister McClay will address the audience with a presentation on "International Trade and the Environment." As the Minister of Agriculture and Minister for Trade, his insights into the global agricultural landscape and the challenges and opportunities it presents will be crucial for attendees.
  • Todd Charteris, CEO Rabobank – Todd Charteris will provide a "Rural Banking Perspective on Agriculture in the International Environment." With over two decades of experience in the banking sector, particularly in food and agriculture, his presentation will offer a financial perspective on the sustainability and profitability of the agricultural industry.

The event is designed to provide farmers, industry professionals, and stakeholders with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the future of farming successfully. By focusing on soil health, the event will highlight how sustainable practices can lead to both ecological and economic benefits.
